USOC May Tour 2020 to London
First of all, it’s important to point out that in 2020 the first May Bank Holiday is being moved to Friday 8th to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. However, the committee has decided to stick with our usual pattern so our dates will be as above. If this causes a problem for anyone, we can arrange for them to leave the party on the Sunday evening. It’s almost certain that the main party will again leave Belfast International Airport for London Gatwick on Friday early evening, hopefully around 18.30, rather than on Saturday morning.
London has been chosen again for next year. Apart from a public recital at St Paul’s Cathedral by James Lancelot, the focus will be on venues that are not part of the ‘usual tourist trail’-rather others that have interesting organs and buildings. Visits to Bloomsbury Baptist, St John the Evangelist RC church, Islington, St Michael and All Angels P.C., Bedford Park, the Freemasons’ Hall, Covent Garden and Eton College (several organs) have already been agreed: in that short list alone many organ builders are represented.
Final costs will depend on how soon we can confirm flights and accommodation and whether any group dinners can be arranged. Indicative costs for flights, accommodation, fees and travel in London, but no meals, based on three nights are approximately £295 each if sharing accommodation and £375 for single occupancy. These costs include flights from Belfast so clearly anyone arranging to travel themselves from elsewhere will pay less. However, these prices assume accommodation is booked on an ‘early booking, no cancellation’ basis as the price reduction for doing so in London is particularly significant, and availability limited. Therefore, in order to try to secure the best deal for members, the first booking deadline is earlier than usual with a second deadline at a potentially higher price.
- 14th August is the first deadline for receipt of a fully completed booking form and the appropriate deposit. We’ll book accommodation for the applicants who have submitted forms and paid deposits by then.
- 7th September is the second and final deadline. We’ll book accommodation at the prevailing price and flights (when timetable released and where required) for members who have submitted forms and paid deposits by then.
- flight and accommodation bookings will be on a ‘non-refundable’ basis: it is your responsibility to arrange travel insurance to provide cover in the event of ill health or some other insurable factor preventing you from being able to travel, or some other loss occurring while away. To do so is recommended. USOC will not be liable in any way.
- Please complete the reply slip below and return it with your cheque to Philip Walden, 20 Hazeldene Avene, Bangor, BT20 4RA (or e-mail if paying electronically). Please make sure to complete the form precisely as requested.
